Through its US subsidiary the Canadian-based Deep Sea Minerals Corp has gained yet further loosening of US federal oversight of the exploration and exploitation of under sea minerals. The federal authority has itself gone a step further in aiming to issue licences for such operations in international waters.. The Corporation is in line to get such a licence for 150 square kilometres of the Pacific Ocean between Hawaii and Mexico believed to contain significant deposits of nickel, cobalt, copper and manganese all important to civilian and military technological production.

Tribal opposition to the Sector II project stems from decades of historical injustices these communities have faced, especially as the Raigarh district of Chhattisgarh became a cluster of coal-mining projects. These projects have already polluted the air, contaminated groundwater, and reduced the soil’s fertility for farming. This Adani “project” is a clear violation of the tribal and forest rights and is involving two thousand police for its operation.
