After smashing engines and destroying navigation arrays, the military retreated—intentionally leaving hundreds of civilians stranded on powerless, broken vessels directly in the path of a massive approaching storm. Israel as a state is enthusiastic only in smashing thing up whether hospitals, orchards or apartment blocks. In this case it follows its military’s doctrine of engineered abandonment. In Gaza itself and in the West Bank it has meant making placed unliveable to the people who have lived there lives there but it also ex ports the tools, tactics and attitudes of lawless repression.
