In prosperous Austria. the province of Upper Austria, a man drugged his wife to sell her for rape-sex as if the Pelicot case in France had not produced enough shame to prevent such things happening again. In this case he referred to his wife as “dead meat”; was making a minimum to 500 Euros a time; and which concluded with her murder. It was her daughter who was left to discover the murdered body and subsequently her father with a continued lack of shame, said he loved her and had loved his wife. This lack of shame post the courage of Madame Pélicot is sadly common across Europe with another case of a drugged wife being rented out now entering the courts in Stockport, close to Manchester in Britain.
South Africa has one of the world’s highest rates of femicide. Women were killed at a rate of 12.2 per 100,000 people in 2022, nearly six times the global rate, according to the UN Office on Drugs and Crime. The bodies of nine women have been discovered dumped across Ekurhuleni, the municipality adjoining Johannesburg to the east, since 15 July. The national government, declared gender-based violence as a crisis of the whole nation in in November 2025, but is failing to do more to protect women. “There’s no scenario where women are prioritised,” a woman member of a running club one of whose members was among the murdered, said . “The government doesn’t take us seriously. The men of South Africa don’t take themselves seriously. They don’t take us seriously. It’s just dangerous to be a woman in South Africa and it’s very sad to be a woman in South Africa.”
A woman student who was rugged and “gang “ raped by seven male students of an elite “fraternity” of an elite USA university, Cornell two years ago has confronted her abusers and the university itself with a civil law case. This is not an isolated or specifically US case of entitlement at institutions of Higher education, indeed the category “campus rape” has entered the vocabulary. In the case of Cornell, it and the local police cover-up is being blown out of the water and it does have specific features. The present climate w is encouraged from the top, it is horrifying to realise here a culture of misogyny, humiliation and impunity that these fraternities are crucial to the reproduction of those at the top of the judiciary, politics and corporate capitalism. The university is engaged in a typical “That Was Yesterday” flim-flam with talk of transparency and Thorough investigation prompted by the courage of the woman student who was mauled and devastated.
